MY LOCKER WAS FULL of sand. Pure white playground sand like you’d buy in a bag at the home improvement store. I opened the door and it went everywhere, in my shoes, in Axel’s shoes, down my shirt, and in my eyes. I stood there flailing, squawking with pain, and two hands took hold of me from behind.

“I’ve got you.”

Aaron. I surrendered to his care, my eyes squeezed shut while he dusted me off. He even removed my shoes. Then he led me, blind, down the hallway, my bare feet slapping on the floor, and through a doorway into what had to be the boy’s restroom.

“Everybody out,” he said.

Moments later, he was wiping my face and dripping water around my eyes. It was a minute or two before I could open them enough to see him, and even then, they felt like they’d been dipped in acid.

After last night, I didn’t know what to say. He was evidently determined to be nice to me, no matter what.

“He told me kissing her was like a piece of toast,” Aaron said.

He. Logan. Her. Kaitlyn. We both knew she’d done this, maybe with Holly’s help.

“Toast?” I asked, my voice echoing in the room.

“Mmm, and I distinctly remembered thinking our kiss wasn’t like toast at all.”

I smiled. It wasn’t.

“Not the first or the second time,” he finished. “Did you see what she was wearing this morning?”

No. I hadn’t. I’d been too busy batting sand away.

“If her skirt gets any shorter, we’ll know it all.”

I contemplated that. Why would she dress that way? To impress Logan? That made me wonder if Logan was that shallow because Aaron didn’t seem impressed.

“Well ...” He released me. “You good to go? The bells’ gonna ring.”

It was. I dusted myself off yet again and exited at his side. I had to return to the scene of the crime, so to speak, and dig out my books.

The janitor was already there, back bent, face toward the floor in front of my locker. He swept the broom back and forth, more pushing the sand around than removing it. At sight of me, he paused, the broom clutched in his hand. “Don’t suppose you know who did this?”

Of course, I did, but I wasn’t about to say. That’s all I needed, to be a snitch as well as a boyfriend stealer. I shook my head. “No.”

He snorted and continued on. The vice principal, Mr. Walker, rounded the corner a minute later, his arms swinging and shiny shoes clicking on the tile. “Miss Modell,” he said. He stopped in front of me and a flap of hair over his scalp stuck upright. “Who did this?”

I brushed off my books and the remainder of the sand from inside my locker. “I don’t know.”

“Mr. Loving?”

Aaron? I frowned. “No way. Aaron would never.”

“He’s done it before.”

He had? This was news to me and not likely, I thought.

“Well, he’s not doing it now,” I said. “Aaron’s my friend.”

Aaron’s face rose into my view. He was behind Mr. Walker, leaning against the wall.
